C., attended the Forest Grove Schools, Cove Creek High School, Appalach ian Training School, has been a school teacher, bookkeeper, Watauga County Tax Supervis or, farmer, merchant, chairman of Watauga County Board of Commissioners, secretary-treas urer Boone National Farm Loan Association; president, Federal Land Bank of Boone; is chair nyin, Board of Directors First National Bank of Boone; served four terms in the North Caro lina Legislature from Watauga County; is a teacher of the Mep’s Bible Class of the First Baptist Church of Boone; serv ed four years as moderator of the Three Forks Baptist Asso ciation; is manager and part owner of Tater Hill, Inc.; has been a U. S. Commissioner for more than thirty years, a candi date for North Carolina State Treasurer, a candidate for Lt. Governor; has had a radio pro gram on WATA for more than eight years and has been a real estate broker for more than 30 years. Mr. Eggers is married to the former Nora South. They have three living children, Stacy C. Eggers, Jr., attorney, Christine Eggers Simons, teacher, and Margaret Eggers Perry, teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Eggers make their home on the Bristol Road, Boone. For Representative JAMES HOLSHOUSER (Republican) Jim Holshouser, incumbent Watauga County Representative |n the General Assembly, is a native Wataugan. He attended Appalachian High School and was president of the senior class. He graduated from Dav idson College, where he was sports editor of the college newspaper and school year book. E. and Virginia Holshouser of Boone. He.is married lo ithe former Pat Hollingsworth, and they have a seven-months old daughter, Ginny. GEORGE FLOWERS (Democrat) Mr. George A. Flowers, Jr., of Boone owns and operates Flowers’ Photo Shops in Boone fend West Jefferson. He is close ly associated with many com munity and civic enterprises, being the immediate Past Pres ident of the Boone Optimist Club; a member of the Boone Moose Lodge, a former Past President of the Hickory Ex change Club and Board Mem ber of the N. C. Exchange Club. He has been associated with North Carolina broadcasting for many years, owned and operat ed a radio station at Culpepper, Va., and is now News Corres pondent for UPI News Service and for television station WBTV. He is a veteran of World War H, and served on a ship that was sunk by enemy action in 'the Sicily invasion of 1943. Mr. Flowers is a graduate of Hickory High School and at tended Clemson College and Le noir Rhyne College. Mr. Flowers lives on High land Avenue Extension with his wife, Millie, and 18 year old daughter, Patricia, and 12 year old twins, Cecile and Arthur. The Flowerses are members of the Boone Methodist Club. L. H. SMITH (Democrat) Louis H. Smith, attorney, opened his law offices in Boone in February 1944. He is mar* ried to the former Miss Annie Ballinger of Guilford College. The Smiths have two children, a son in the XJ'. S. Air Force for 22 years and a daughter in Greensboro who was formerly a school teacher in the United States and Cuba. The Smiths have six grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were in strumental in re-opening the Blowing Rock Methodist Church after it had been closed for 15 years. Mr. Smith, in addi tion to promoting two real es tate subdivisions of his own, was one of the promoters of the Blowing Rock Ski Lodge, Inc., thus opening a new era of winter activities in Watauga County. Mr. Smith served a short while in World War I being dis charged as Batallion Sergeant Major attached to the Head quarters Company 81st Division. He was one of the original mem bers of the Civil Air Patrol. He is now Legal Officer for the Middle East Region of Civil Air Patrol, with the rank of Lt. Colonel, He is present Vice-President of the Blowing flock Chamber of Commerce, having served as President for two years. He was educated at Golds boro High School and in pri vate schools m Charlotte and New York, trained as a lawyer, accountant and petroleum tech nician. He has served in staff and executive positions for na tionally known corporations and organizations. For Commissioners BYNUM GREENE (Republican—Incumbent) Mr. Bynum Greene was born in Watauga County and Jias lived all his life here. Mr. Greene is Republican in cumbent for nomination for county commissioner, having served in this capacity for six years. 1 ■ JOHN F. GREENE (Republican—Incumbent) *V Mr. John F. Greene 'is a na tive Wataugan, a farnjer wttd* lives on Route 2, Boone,- with bis wife, the former Doreatha Long of Wilmington. Mr. and Mrs. Greene have five children, Mrs. Jay Royall, Boone, Mrs. Wayne Fletcher, Jefferson, Floyd, Bobby and Marie Greene of the home. He received his education at Appalachian schools. He is an active member of the Meat Camp Baptist Church. Mr. Greene has served as County Commissioner for the past two years. JAMES C. LYONS (Republican—Incumbent) James C. “Red” Lyons, age 27, is a resident of Route 4, Boone, and Blue Ridge Town ship. Red is an active member in the Deerfield Methodist Church and is church lay lead er and music director. He is a graduate of Appala chian High School and is cur rently employed by Mountain Oil Co:, Inc. He is married to the farmer Peggy Hampton of Boone. They have two sons. ELMER MILLER <RepuWi©au Candidate) ' Elmer Miller was born and buss lived aU his life in f|ra tauga County. Mr. MUler 1* a farmer and works at Tweetsie Railroad in the summer months. He is married to the former Ruth Ashley and has one son, William £. Miller, of Route 1, Blowing Rode. Mr. Miller is: the son of J. C. Miller, who served two terms as commis sioner in 1918 and 1920. - He is a member of Laurei Fork Baptist Church and re ceived his education at the Aho - -■ --v.' -j FRED MICHAEL (Republican Candidate) Fred Michael, 33, of the Valle Crucis community, has lived all his life in Watauga County; He attended the Valle Crucis school and is a gradute of Cove Creek High School. Mr. Michael is a Korean War veteran, is married to the form er Faith Townsend and they have two children. Fred farms and runs a sawmill, is a mem ber of the Holy Communion Lu theran Church, a Mason,- a member of Farm Bureau and the Valle Crueis Community Club This is Fred’s first en deavor to seek public office and he has filed for the nomination for county' commissioner. mmmmummmmmm mm JOHN D. WEUJSORN (Republican “Candidate) John D. Wellborn was born in Watauga County and has lived in the county all his life. Mr. Wellborn is a merchant at Route 1, Deep Gap, is married to the former'Blanche Greene. They have two children, Shir rel, and Jerry .of the home. Mr. Wellborn fs a' member' of the Stony Fork Baptist Church and received his education at Boone High School. Mr. Wellborn is seeking the nomination as County Com missioner, having filed as a Republican candidate. GORDON H. WINKLE* (Democrat) t ; Gordon H. Winkler is a life time resident of Watauga Coun ty, having served in public off ice intermittently since 1840. Mr. Winkler was mayor of Boone for almost 18 years, served as a member of both the House of Representatives and State Senate, is a member of the First Baptist Church, is Cab inet Secretary of the Lions Clah, a Mason and taw ween very active in both public and civic attain. Hr. Winkler haa been in the insurance and banking business for 25 years. Mr. Winkler received his edu cation at Appalachian State Teachers College, is married and Jhas two daughters, Mrs. Anna Boyce Phillips of Boone and Mrs. Barbara W. Dunnigan of Winston-Salem. He is a national di rector of the Ruritan Club, a member of the Blowing, Rock Baptist Church. Pitts is married to the form er Betty Rupert of Blowing Rock and they have seven chil dren. Mr. Pitts has filed as a Dem ocratic nominee for County Commissioner. J. B. RAGAN (Democrat) 3. B. Ragan, 44, Todd, is a graduate of Eikland High School. During World War II he served three years with the U. S. Army as a topographical engineer. He worked six years as an electrician and is present ly a brick mason. Mr. Ragan is married to the former Ger aldine Bledsoe. They have two children, Steve, 14; and Mary lane, 12. Mr. Ragan is a member of Blackburn’s Chapel Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Ashler Lodge No. 373. Mr. Ragan is a candidate for the County Board of Commis sioners. b. A. Spainhour is Pres ident and Treasurer of the Boone Insurance Agency, Inc. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and is serving on the church expan sion and student committees of the church. He is Secretary - Treasurer and Past President of the Boone Optimist Club and Past District Chairman of Watauga District, Old Hickory Council Boy Scouts of America. He recived his BS degree in Engineering at N. C. State. He and his family came here from Lenoir four years ago and live on State Farm Road. He is married to the former Nane Dimmette and they have four children: David, Jr., 12; De Mette 11; Elizabeth 8; and Lot tie 8. AUD WARD (Democrat) Aud Ward is a retired farmer and construction worker living at Sugar Grove. He is a native Wataugan, having lived all his life here. He is married to the former Lula Henson and they have six children. Aud is a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. He received his education at the Walnut Grove School and the Phillips School in Watauga County. ' * Mr. Ward has served as a Democrat judge in his township and is now seeking nomination as a candidate for -the Board of Commissioners. MTS. EDNA BRITTAIN Democrat v Mrs. Edna Brittain was born in Burke County, but has lived m Watauga County for the past IS years. She is a North Caro lina licensed nurse, having re ceived her training‘at Grace Hospital, Morganton. She is mar ried to J. Earl Brittain who is vocational instructor in the Wittes County Schools. They have one son, Robert, who is a graduate of N. C. State College, god one daughter, Carolyn, who is a senior at the Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing. Mrs. Brittain is a member of Greenway Baptist Church and has filed for the nomination to the Board of County Commis sioners. •• r"'- ■ ROBT. W. (BOB) DAVIS Robert W. (Bob) Davis, age 44, is ' a native of - Watauga County. He is a graduate of Ap palachian High School, -served four years with the'U. r S. Air Force in World War II. Two and one half years of tills, time was spent in the Pacific theater where be was a member of the famous Carrier Aircraft Service Unit No. I. Bob is a member of the Boone Methodist Church; a life member of the' National Rifle Association, He has been emptied by Colvard Chevrolet, Inc., and at present at Andrews Chevrolet, Inc., as service man ager. He is married to the former Joyce Sutherland of Creston. They have one daughter, Cathy, and reside on Edgewood Drive in Boon*. Mr. Davis has filed as a Democrat candidate for elec tion to the Board of County Commissioners. For County Board of Education GRADY MORJSTZ, JR. (Democrat Incumbent) Grady Moretz, Jr., is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Moretz of Boone. Mr. Moretz was educat ed at Appalachian Elementary and High School and at the University of North Carolina. He spent four years in the Navy during the Korean War, and since then has been in the lum ber and building supply busi ness at Daap Gap. Mr. Moretz is active in the Watauga County Young Demo cratic club, is a charter member and past president of the Boone Jaycees. In 1958 and 1961 he received the Jaycees Disting uished Service Award as the outstanding young man of the year. ■ . Mr. Moretz is a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and a member of the Church Coun cil. He has served as president and campaign manager of the Watauga County United Fund and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Watauga Hospi tal. He was president of the 15th District of the North Car olina School Board Association. He is a member of the board of directors of Blowing Rock Ski Lodge, Inc., and Secretary Treasurer. ' ' In February 1900, Mr. Moretz was appointed to membership on the Watauga County Board of Education by recommenda tion of the Democratic Execu tive Committee and has served on the board since that time. He is a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and a former professional football star. Mr. Hollar is currently serv ing as a member of the Board of Education, having been ap pointed in 1963. He is married to the former Theresa Payseur and they have two children, John, Jr. and Terry. He is a member .of the Three Forks Baptist Church. He and his family make their home on Reynolds Road, Boone. JAMES S. STOUT (Republican) Janies S. (Jim) Stout is a candidate for the Watauga County Board of Education. He' has been employed as Sales En gineer by International Resist ance Company for the past four yean. He is a graduate of Wes ton High School, Weston, W. Va., and continued his educa tion «t General Motors Insti tute, Flint, ^Michigan.
